 Background:
Sir Len Southward was a major, long term, benefactor of the Wellington Paraplegic and Physically Disabled  Association and very generously made available the funds from which this grant was made.
For many years the source of these funds was anonymous, but since his death, Lady Southward has agreed to  the renaming of the former Adventure Award to honour Sir Len and recognise his contribution.

 Criteria:
Applicants must have participated or intend to participate in a challenging adventure project either during the  past or coming calendar year for which applications for an award has been sought. The project must be challenging and the participant must be able to show their tenacity, enthusiasm and above all their personal drive in achieving their goal.

Who Is Eligible:
The awards are available to any person who has a physical disability and are open to all New Zealand citizens.
While the awards are intended primarily for individuals, small groups (such as duets, trios or quartets) will be considered eligible in applying for a common project or objective.

Condition of application:
Applicants must be permanent residents of New Zealand, they must agree that information and photographs supplied as part of the application, or subsequently obtained by the judges, may be used at any time to promote the awards.
Applicants must state that the project or goal for which the award is sought was completed in the year ended 31st December immediately past or will be completed in the year immediately following the award presentation. They must also agree that the decision of the judging panel will be final.

Closing Date:
Applications must be submitted by the 1st November in each year.

These awards have been for activities as diverse as (in no particular order):
skiing course in Canada; wheelchair basketball participation and training; recording war veterans’ experiences; an art project;
